چکیده

Light-wave propagation in a randomly scattering but uniformly and coherently amplifying optical medium is analysed for the statistics of the coefficient of reflection r(l) that may now exceed unity, hence super-reflection. Uniform coherent amplification is introduced phenomenologically through a constant negative imaginary part added to the otherwise real dielectric constant of the medium, assumed random. The probability density p(r, l) for the reflection coefficient, calculated in a random phase approximation, tends to an asymptotic form p(r,∞) having a long tail with divergent mean 〈r〉 in the limit of weak disorder but with the sample length l (measured in units of the localization length in the absence of gain) 1. This super-reflection is attributed to a synergetic effect of localization and coherent amplification, as distinct from the classically diffusive path-length prolongation. Our treatment is based on the invariant-imbedding method for the one-channel (singlemode) case, and is in the spirit of the scattering approach to wave transport as pioneered by Landauer. Generalization to the multichannel case is pointed out. Relevance to random lasers, and some recent results for a sub-meanfree path sample are also briefly discussed. c © 1998 Academic Press Limited

Enhancement of coherent light amplification using Anderson localization

Several aspects of interplay between Anderson localization and coherent amplification/absorption, and aspect of mirrorless laser for a laser-active (amplifying) disordered dielectric medium have been addressed. We have calculated the statistics of the reflection coefficient and the associated phase for a light wave reflected from a coherently amplifying/absorbing one-dimensional disordered diel...

Lévy statistical fluctuations from a Random Amplifying Medium

We report the studies of emission from a novel random amplifying medium that we term a “Lévy Laser” due to the non-Gaussian statistical nature of its emission over the ensemble of random realizations. It is observed that the amplification is dominated by certain improbable events that are “larger than rare”, which give the intensity statistics a Lévy like “fat tail”. This, to the best of our kn...

Transmission and reflection in a perfectly amplifying and absorbing medium

We study transmission and reflection properties of a perfectly amplifying as well as absorbing medium analytically by using the tight binding equation. Different expressions for transmittance and reflectance are obtained for even and odd values of the sample length which is the origin of their oscillatory behavior. In a weak amplifying medium, a cross-over length scale exists below which transm...

Fiber-Random Amplifying Medium : An optical realization of the Arrhenius cascade

In the previous chapters, we had shown Lévy statistical fluctuations in the emission intensity from dye-scatterer random amplifying media (RAMs). The large jumps in intensity resulted from rare events where a photon traversed a long path in the gain medium owing to multiple scattering and was significantly amplified. The work presented in this chapter was undertaken to establish the crucial rol...

Propagation of squeezed radiation through amplifying or absorbing random media

Squeezed radiation is in a state in which one of the quadratures of the electric field fluctuates less than the other [1,2]. Such a nonclassical state is useful, because the fluctuations in the photon flux can be reduced below that of a Poisson process — at the expense of enhanced fluctuations in the phase. Sub-Poissonian noise is a delicate feature of the radiation, it is easily destroyed by t...
